  • 1,900 Women are incarcerated in Alabama.
  • 70% of the women in prison are mothers.
  • More than 40% of imprisoned women have experienced physical, sexual or
    emotional abuse.
  • 80% of women reported an income of less than $2,000/year before their arrest.
  • 90,000 women are incarcerated in the United States for economic crimes.
  • 500,000 children nationwide are separated from their mothers.
  • Over 3,000 children are separated from their mothers in Alabama.
  • 23% of the women return to prison because of the many barriers they face
    upon release.
  • The female inmate population in Alabama has grown by 58% since 1990.
  • Children of imprisoned mothers are six times more likely to than their peers
    to end up in jail.

  • Provide emotional interaction between inmate mothers and their children.
  • Support the children of inmates through outreach programs.
  • Improve inmate mothers' parenting skills.
  • Minimize the likelihood of child abuse or neglect.
  • Help the mothers make a successful transition from prison to community life.
